The discipline

What is Working Equitation?

Working Equitation grew out of the working riding traditions of Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. It tests the partnership between horse and rider: precision, ease of handling, and a willing, rideable horse.

In general terms, USAWE licensed shows are built around three core trials:

  • DressageA ridden test of the horse's gaits, balance and submission.
  • Ease of HandlingA course of obstacles ridden for quality and smoothness.
  • SpeedThe obstacles again, this time against the clock.

Get involved

Volunteer, sponsor or bring a booth

A Working Equitation show runs on volunteers. No horse experience needed for most jobs, and it's the best seat in the house.

  • Volunteers: scribes for the judges, ring stewards, timers and runners for the speed round, course crew to reset obstacles.
  • Sponsors: put your name in front of riders, trainers and families from across Southern California.
  • Vendors: tack, apparel, equine services, food and drinks are all welcome.
